These are the people who inspire me. These are the people I want to be counted in someday. These are the people who were there at the NH7 Weekender, Pune. At least in that environment, in those colours, the bright lights, the drunken haze and the magical sound of music, everybody looked like energy was literally flowing out of them and feeding the so happy and satisfied. If only we could live our life making music, making each other happy and counting the smaller joys of life, everything would make so much sense. But till that happens we'll just have to hold on to these beautiful memories and wait for the next NH7 Weekender. Wish I could share the music... Ankur Tewari & the Ghalat family, King Creosote, Swarathma, Papon and the East India Company, Reggae Rajahs, Bhayanak Maut, Mother Jane, Imoge Heap... my head is still ringing with the beautiful music. So many artists that I'd never heard before. It feels like a giant, professionally run crash course into Indie music. A class I'd like to enroll to more often.

He didn't seem like the kind of guy who followed rules. He wasn't the rebellious type either, who would make his own. He was just a good-hearted jolly 'ol fellow. Share a thought or a tune, sit a while and he'll amaze you with his life's stories. Sounds like one of those Jack Kerouac characters. He was the ideal travel partener. Probably the last of the beat generation. Though I didn't know that then. It was a happy accident. He was 50, I was 24 and we had cultures, experiences, religions and what-nots-of the world dividing us. But that only promised a long, entertaining and very involving conversation. With a tune in his heart and a piano on his tie, his enthusiasm was infectious. Meet the Saxophonist/Harmonica player/Guitarist of the Big Bang Blues Band - Mark Mowry

Deep within a valley, far away, rests a lake. Beautiful as any sight can be. With trees so green that it's hard to believe. With travellers coming together and musicians too. Their sound like padpipers pulling us in. Deeper we go, more mesmerizing the sounds become. The deafening silence broken by melodic notes. If this isn't paradise, what is? Maybe the wanderlust is taking over me. Or, the rhythm is still lingering inside my head. I can't forget the three absolutely surreal days I spent at the little hamlet town called Naukuchiatal. My camera went into overdrive as did my trance-induced body. With every music genre being represented by some of country's best talents, it comes as no surprise that the music festival was named 'Escape.' An escape it certainly was!

I miss glamour. The old school way.. the big bouffant hair, the overworked eyelids, full lips, big jewels... yes, so Cannes and MET gala bring in few stunning looks off and on, I'm talking about the real life glamour. You know when women used to perm their hair at home.... actually, when curls were really 'in'. (have I told you how bored I am with the women who want to straighten their hair?)

Think of all the sexy secretaries of the 80's bollywood films. The curly hair bombshells who color matched their outfits. The time when earrings were never to be worn without a necklace or the shoes were always matched with the bag. the good old times when less was NOT more. More was still merrier. Curves were hot, sex was suggestive and disco was a cool word.

These ladies seemed right out of a time wrap and stood out amongst the t-shirt/jeans clad women of Colaba. How glamorous are they even in their ridiculous kaftan dresses and the gorgeous golden jewellery. But what honestly blew me away was their meticulously done hairstyle. I wish we could put so much time into doing our hair. I would kill to wear BIG hair everyday!

While some of you may find this post disconnected with the present aesthetics, I can assure you gold accessories and big hair would be back in vogue with a vengeance.

Me1: Imagine No Possession, I wonder if you can" said Lennon in his popular track. It overnight became an anthem of sorts. I sometimes wonder if you ever could leave possessions.

Me2: Forget leaving everything, even parting with the smallest of things, sometimes, is a heartbreaking process. Don't things we surround ourselves with, define us in a way?

Me1: No, Spardha, its all in the mind. You're too materialistic.

Me2: Are you serious? Isn't the smallest thing that you've ever picked up have a memory attached to it? Isn't it a horcrux of sorts? I always found the Hogwartian concept of Horcrux fascinating. Though I wouldn't go as far as to say that a part of your soul is captured in your possessions but don't they have some bitter-sweet memories attached, some hint of character?

Me1: You take yourself very seriously. You present life and your little toys. What do you do to nourish your soul?

Me2: Me1, you die now. I might plug you out.

Me1: You give too many Matrix/Harry Potter references.

Me2: Salim's mother was afraid of photographs, believing that they capture one's soul. Reference : Rushdie's Midnight's Children. I think its another rather extreme concept. For if it were true, I doubt if all of us with Facebook profiles would even have any souls left.

Me1: Get to the point.

Me2: I think you can tell a lot about a person by analyzing the things they surround themselves with. This may not be an accurate measure of anybody's personality but it sure is very interesting.

Me1: Sure. You have no hope.

Sizil Srivastava always surrounds himself with beautiful things. Being a one part Libran, he enjoys the arts. He can paint and sketch to an arguably medium skilled level. He reads when he has time, listens to music when he runs or is drunk. He unfolds paper shopping bags to sketch and paints on the reverse side. In fact, he can start sketching on pretty much anything. He was very attached to the guy who framed his art works and mourns his death. He is 26 years old. These are his 'horcruxes'

Move over Duchess of Cambridge, your gorgeous Sarah Burton dress has hogged enough limelight, its time for everybody to take notice of this stunning White dress. I have spent last three days trying to find anything that looks remotely like that dress with no luck.

Lykke Li's childish voice has been largely appreciated around the world. Even I have fallen victim to the haunting notes and painful innocence evident in her style of music. ever since her first album 'Youth Novels' came out, she has been dominating the underground indie music scene. But its with her second album 'Wounded Rhymes' that she has gone more mainstream. the sound is mature, the video is a brilliantly shot short film and her screen presence is phenomenal. I'm pretty sure we'll see her in a movie soon.

Okay, so lovers and friends, please join forces and find that dress for me or anything that looks remotely like this dress. I'd be eternally grateful.

Bright Attack!

This is what I hate about working in fashion. I hate it, truly. I make up my mind that this is going to be my signature style (yes I spend a lot of time thinking about such ’frivolous’ things such as signature styles and personal statements) and there comes another season with its crazy truckloads of trends and dare-i-say fads. I shrug them off almost smugly thinking aah-kids-these-days and things-they-wear only to find myself obsessing about those exact things in a few weeks. Its mysterious how the appearance of the same things on the runways to blogs to magazines can completely alter your perception of things. So before I drift into my ‘loathing to loving’ cycle of clogs or culottes and take you through an elaborate account of everyday complex emotions, we would much rather deal into the serious matter at hand. Its about brights. Yes, the colours. Don’t let my blog deceive you, I’m a very grey-scale girl at heart (and wardrobe).

So, its rather disturbing that devious reds and mind-altering neons are making way into my accessory closet (ha, yes that’s what I call that ‘dump’ at the bottom of the TV cabinet.) I even went psychotic at the mall the other day looking for the orangiest lip color. I kept screaming ‘mirinda’ for reference. After 2 hour and more than 50 lipstick trials, I finally found the dreamiest orange at Chambor. My blissful moment was interrupted when my mum pointed out how its the exact same shade as my Tresmode espadrilles. Man, before my bright mania starts invading my apparel wardrobe (No more Prada, Jil Sander or Celine SS re-runs for me) I thought I’d spread out the word. How much longer do I have before the virus spreads?

Observations at WIFW #3 - Editors keep it cool.

Unlike the Carine Roitfields and Anna Dello Russos of the world, the Indian fashion editors like to keep it (relatively) simple and chic. Though there are a few exceptions, I'm sure we would love to see more drama! Its about time we start wearing our heart on the sleeve, non? (see what i did there?) Though it must be said they look so intimidating with their prada bags and perfect manis, they are surprisingly sweet to talk to and encourage the blogger scene (okay maybe not all of them!)

While we are all fairly familiar with all these glossies (and pretty much feed on them), its good to know the hardworking souls working behind the scenes, who months in advance scout the global trends, introduce us to the fashion front - runners and inspire us to look past the bad hair days!

It smells of love

Mr. Dior's instructions to the perfumer's creating Miss Dior were simple: “Create a fragrance that is like love.” But, the fragrance went unnamed until the elegant Mitzah Bricard saw Christian’s sister Catherine enter the Dior Couture boutique and said: “Look, there is Miss Dior!”. “Miss Dior! That is my perfume!” exclaimed Christian and finally christened the perfume. More than one liter of pure fragrance was sprinkled every week in Dior’s first boutique when it opened in February 1947.

Almost treated as an heirloom piece, this little bottle of Miss Dior has travelled three generations to reach Deepika Dayal's perfume cabinet. This was bought sometime in the 70's for her grandmother. I dare not even spray the half full content of this rare vintage find. 'Please be very careful,' were the only words she spoke to me as I started to take pictures of the bottle but throughout the five minutes that the bottle remained carefully placed on the china dish, her eyes were fixed on it. The box also smells as sweet as the bottle. Over the years, the cardboard too has become protective of the bottle. The bow intact on the neck of the bottle stands proud even with its whithered satin fabric. It smells, feels and reminds me of love. I wonder how many more generations would this bottle travel. Knowing Deepika, it will definitely make it to her kids!

I'm not sure if I have any such treasures worth romanticizing about except my great grand mom's little tin box that houses her little handkerchief collection with embroidered flowers and Crochet trims. But that's for another time.

The Industry - WIFW'11

The fashion Industry in India is carving its own identity on to the world map. The gaps are filling in, trends are emerging, designers are taking risks and more attention is being paid to design (as opposed to PR stunts). We just might be coming into our own but we are certainly not there yet.

Having drooled over some of their collections from my days in NIFT to actually meeting them face to face, this indeed was one of the coolest privileges of attending WIFW. Its rather funny that most of the designers are surprisingly camera shy and need a lot of persuasion to get a picture. Regardless, I did get few of them to coyly smile for my camera.

Also this post reminded me of a Note I recently read on the facebook profile of my NIFT senior - Arathi Cherian. Filled me with full-on nostalgia and I thought it would be perfect for this post.

I love how Anti-fashion is Fashion..how no one is exempted from the chain no matter how unfashionable they may claim to be.

I love that because of the likes of us, Cerulean, Cobalt and Prussian suffer from no identity crisis.

I love that a Galliano and a Calvin Klein can co-exist so...umm..fashionably?? ...and while we’re talking Galliano, I’m on his side, the poor genius!!!

I love our depth and our shallowness and that we can flit from one to the other as we please.... our kisses in the air and our hunger to leave the world a little more chic than we found it.

Super hipster <Sailexx> I love his slightly edgy take on construction!! <Anuj Sharma> challenges the complete concept of garment construction with his innovative collections. I adore him!

<James Ferreira> is the Sex! the lazy sunday morning kind. <Aki Narula>'s crazy layering always surprises me!!

Felix Bendish - the most creative accessory designer on the block. Narresh's craazzzy glasses that he got from Venice. he's been looking for something even edgier for the last 2 years. hmmmm... any suggestions?

<Nitin Bal Chauhan> taking a break from his regular collections, Nitin is working on his painting skills (and sketching). As you can tell by his painting titled 'Eat, Drink, Make merry' in the background, that he finished in a day at WIFW, he's going a looong way in either direction he chooses. Watch out for his painting exhibition soon.

The absolutely charming <Prashant Verma> and the god of drapes <Gaurav Gupta> with someone very important in the middle.

So, Power to us, eh?

Strawberries, Cherries and an angel's kiss in spring, Rehane's Summer line was really made from all these things. Fruity colors, floral prints, contrasts, sheers and fringing. Though it was off the season format, the collection was very young and wearable. The best part though was the styling - Contrast head scarves and flower/fruit accents with red mouths and fringed bags.

Neeru Kumar

With shows lined up one after the other and high expectations from a lot of designers, one tends to skip the newbies. Not that Neeru Kumar is technically a newbie. She has been creating collections over last 30 years and using her NID-acquired skills to generate very profitable international business. This being her first runway showing, one wasn't sure what to expect. It was a delightful show, to say the least. I'm always partial to textile designers. they really engineer the fabric and make the most out of the simplest silhouette. The earthy color palette, extensive layering, multiple textures and contemporary cuts were the strong points of the collection.

Super Secret Stem Code

Sabyasachi WIFW A/W 11

So when you hear the grand finale is by Sabyasachi, you are bound to brace yourself for a fantastic mindblowingly crazy show. Sabya is a genius and nobody can deny it. He's consistently been churning out collections that are not only a hit with the fashion critics but also with the buyers. His style is so developed and mature that some can argue that he's not experimental enough. Which is true to certain extent but Sabya continues to remain in his comfort zone and yet bring out a range that is exciting. A/W 11 wasn't only a fantastic collection but also an immensely entertaining show. Yes, it does look mildly inspired by Jil Sander and also reminds you of Prada but it would be unfair to write him off. If Jil and Sabya had a baby, this collection would be born. A very beautiful baby indeed.

The show started with a jazz singer singing 'I will survive' with a live band. the broadway-esque lights read Wills Lifestyle Sabyasachi with giant books on both sides. The runway was lit with bulbs on the sides. The strings of bulbs hanging on the top only added to the grand 40's drama.

If you answered yes to all of the above, then you better have a damn good excuse to not cut that dowdy old pair of denims lying in the back of your closet into a super chic pair of shorts. And if you don't, well then get a pair of scissors, some sand paper and killer creativity and put it all to good use. Rip it, bleach it, shred it, go crazy with it. Coz this pair is gonna last you all summer...

Btw that gorgeous block printed scarf comes back with me from a recent trip to Rajasthan. Isn't it beautiful? Vegetable dyed and 100% Indian mul-mul. Scarves are so Major this season. That reminds me gotta do a post on it soon!

Free of Season, Sex and Statement

I think looking natural and looking long and lean and modern - I think this can be adapted to a man and a woman in the same way....... I dont believe in that (gender definitions) at all. Its the same thing for me as country limits, language limits, relegion.

When I say "young forever" that doesn't mean I want to dress up as a kid...... I don't want to look like a club kid and I don't want to look like a grandma, I just want to look modern forever.

I dont belive that someone can be straight or gay or bisexual. I think we're all born completely bi and I think it's like an animal instinct. The way we grow up -- that's where everything gets established.

When I say (my clothes are) asexual, I don't mean non-sexy. I mean more unisex, like its not gender limited. I prefer the word sensual to sexual. I think the word sexual is limited.

I think its lovely to experiment with no limits, and to just go all the way.... I find that some people at some point in their life learn to accept their attraction to the same sex, and stop their "conditioning" -- the way they've been conditioned.

(I'm) Allergic to trends. I'm just allergic to this mentality (of following trends). I'd rather have people who really get it without having to be told. Those people who support what you do from the beginning.

Oh, and I had Barbies all the time -- I was addicted. (laughs) I would dress them all the time, just dress them and make clothes for them... I was late every morning going to school because I'd be dressing them up.

I can never be inspired by sitting in a chair and telling myself that I have to sketch. I'll be on a plane, in a taxi, or at a meeting. Before sleeping, I always get up and have to put (a sketch) down.

I love when lines are close to each other. I like angular shapes. Yes, I love the rectangle. Maybe, because it's wider, it's more open. A square is very limited, and a circle is loo cozy. (Laughs) A rectangle is deep.

I don't believe in spring, summer, fall, winter. I believe in a world where you can wear anything anytime. I believe in layering. I make clothes to adapt to any season.

( about his Spring/Summer'10 collection) You know, I always sketch on the same canvas. I don't change the silhouette; it stays the same. I'm getting the tops bigger and the jackets tighter. The pants remain the same.

I've been seeing florals everywhere - on runways, on high street, even sarojni nagar for screaming out loud. I'm not too into it and therefore came up with this post on how to wear it (if at all) without looking like a total bouquet!

If florals make you queasy here’s a how-to manual for the faint hearted:

1. Instead of running away on the ‘flower child’ wagon, pick a ditsy floral print
2. Pair it with a light cotton or denim shirt to break the monotony
3. Ditch the ruffles and tiers and pick details like exposed zippers or asymmetrical hems
4. Top it up with a cool headband or a butch bracelet
5. Black nail paint can also help underplay the florals

A good book, a picnic basket and a sunny day.... you’re all set for a day in the park!

Electronics+Colors

Of all chic things that define us, have you noticed how BIG a part have electronics started playing? The purple Ipod, The blue VAIO, the lime green Blackberry, the Red Car.... You can have one look and KNOW the person. Ok, not really 'know' them. That would be creepy! you get the drift, right.

Anyway so recently when Samsung invited me to be a part of their focus group to do an Indian Color study for their line of refrigerators and other home appliances, I got super excited and happily participated. It was also a great opportunity to meet some other people from the 'industry,' each of them representing a different part of it - Fashion designing, Visual Merchandising, Photography and Fashion Buying.

The 2-person Product designer team from Samsung HQ, Korea was super excited to know about the the 'new' Indians. So long story short, lots of ideas and personal experiences were thrown across the table and we each were supposed to sum up our proposal in a color palette. Me, being a big supporter of bright colors advised them to come out with a range targetting the 'moving-out' young adults. A mid priced range of home appliances in Retro colors - Tomato Red, Mustard yellow, Sky Blue and White.

It seemed the fashion designers seemed to agee with my forecast and sighted highlight colors as another big trend. So if you see a color blocked refrigerator or a boring grey fridge with a cherry yellow handle and crevices, you'd know who thought of it!!

I've been away

Not Really, I haven't been away. I've just been lying on my ass and getting a lot of rest. No, it wasn't a lazy spell. I was genuinely unwell. A viral fever gone bad. How, you ask? You're being very interrogative today! Well turns out an anti-allergic they give you can cause an undesired reaction. And they say medical science is changing our lives. Okay, so I have been lying in my bed over last fortnight recuperating while you've been dolling up every day and living an awesome life. Not really? Life sucks either way, no?

So before I went ahead and got all un-chicly sick and stuff, I did do some fun stuff... coming up in next posts.

I know there are plenty of other blogs to keep you entertained, but didn't you feel even a slight itch. oh lets not talk about itches. Very bad memories there. I'm sure you missed me... just a little? I'm being needy. Its the anti-biotics talking, I swear.

The Avant Garde Tribe, Andhra Pradesh

For lack of a better name (or actual information) I call this Andhra Pradesh tribe the Avant Garde tribe. Why? Find out for yourself -

With that kind of costume, you could inspire super heroes... Look at those Power Shoulders (and you thought only Lady Gaga could pull them off!) The insanely oversized necklaces and those ear masks?! The blue and white layered tunic/maxi looks perfect for summers.

The Drum chest brace! I dont think thats really part of the outfit but it could be an interesting styling accesory for a runway look!

I know its hard to focus away from the lady's cracked heels but the simplicity of a single strand Rope and bells (Ghungroos) anklets is rather gorgeous. Remind me again why did we stop wearing anklets. Such a discreet little understated accessory!

The Tribe's men wear the three strand anklets. Well since they are performers, the extra sound must come handy! I think they are gorgeous.. Somebody please use them for shoes... Its such a delight to see men wearing accessories!

This brings me to the final and most inspiring sighting of the tribal attire... The Bell shorts. Dude, Look at those. I want one of each. the colors, the contrasting fabric strips, the tiers of oversised bells. I waant them SO bad. If these men understood any hindi or English I would have asked them about their village but no such luck.

Also do you notice that fringe thing hanging from the crotch? These guys are so awesome.

“High Heels are like Burkhas for the modern day woman. Both are societal obligations that women wore over themselves. Its unnecessary. Some may find a woman in high heels very attractive but I just find them utterly uncomfortable and even insecure sometimes. It’s attractive when you are comfortable, when you laugh, when you look great in what you wear. “

“I hate fashion. Fashion is about cycles, about quick disposal. Works of art and luxury need time to conceive and last beyond a lifetime. This is exactly what India is good at. It saddens me to see that most Indian designers are taking the western route to fashion instead of learning from the Japanese. They embraced their heritage and showcased a new dimension to the world.”

Rosenda is an Italian origin and Parisian boutique owner who found love and her life’s objective in India. She runs a label Le Cashmirian on Paris’s Rue de Tournen, housing products handcrafted in India. Her love affair with India has lasted over 2 decades, blame it on her chance meeting with her charming Srinagar born husband or the love of Indian crafts. Rosenda is a highly celebrated designer back home for her love for refined, unadulterated and innovative luxury.

“Fab India is fantastic start for Indian retail but how long can people wear those shapeless clothes. We need to take the step further and add more details, more draping to the gorgeous Indian textiles to make the world sit up and take notice.” Rosenda is also the author of the book, Memoirs – A Textile Journey to India.

“India and Italy have similar culture. We’re both blessed with deep cultural roots, great food and an undying love for our Ma’s. I would hate for India to lose its crafts and textile treasure to cheap modern fabrics like Italy did. Italy once had the nicest knitted laces and fabrics in all of world, look how we lost it all. Its extremely rare to sight those fabrics anymore. If all of Indian youth were to start patronizing Zara and Forever21, what will happen to the Benarasi Silks and Orrisa Ikats?”

Rosenda is also sick of Pop India movement – the loud kitschy patterns and bright Fuschia colors. “For me, India is Ochre. Its the colour of mother earth itself. India has soul to offer. Let the west offer the arrogance and disposability, India can offer timelessness and soulfulness. I love the Abraham and Thakore collections. They make India very proud.”

I met Rosenda in Auroville on our way to the Matri Mandir for mediation. Its amazing how she looks so Indian and yet like a foreigner. She tells me she worked very hard to retain her Italian roots and yet looking appropriate in India.

Isn’t it amazing to see one’s country from foreign eyes every once in a while.

Biker Chicks, Pondicherry

There's nothing quite like feeling the wind in one's hair, balancing the two wheels, gushing past the rest of the world - there's nothink quiet like riding a bike. Its places like Pondicherry and Goa that make you realise that how much of world do you miss sitting inside a car with your windows rolled up, breathing the artificially cooled and recirculated air.

Its fantastic to experience a place on two wheels. Take some inspiration from the women in pondicherry who seem so comfortable riding their two-wheelers in their elegantly wrapped sarees and the garland adorned hair. Its liberating to see a woman ride a bike. Either that or I'm really missing my Auroville moped(gearless bike.) Maybe both.

Every year just around springtime, Delhites flock to the suburban village of Surajkund, which comes alive only for a fortnight to bring together all india craftsmen and some of the neighbourng international craftsmen too. How could I miss all this fun? I cut my travel around South India short and came running back home to capture my favourite village festivities!

The fair is on till 15th Feb. Do visit the fair if you're around or plan a delhi trip around the same time next year. With delish food and crafts from accross india.... Its a feast for the eyes and taste buds alike!

Style Quickie : Uma Haimavati

How often do u hear fashion and social responsibility used in the same sentence. Not very often, I’m assuming. Well then its about time you were acquainted with Upasana, a design studio founded in 1997 by Uma Haimavati in Auroville, Tamil Nadu. Upasana was created with an idea of bringing alive the traditional Indian textiles to translate into a tool of strong cultural communication. Every Indian state possesses its unique personality expressed through its specific textiles and Upasana has emerged as an inspiring design house that’s set out to bring together this diverse range under one roof, with a global sensibility.

The minute you enter the Upasana campus, you realise that its atmosphere itself is almost catalytic to generate creativity. With a huge windchime hanging by a lush tree and a lotus pond right in middle of the pebble lined garden, Upasana is the antidote to the mass-production factories around the world.

Uma, the founder and master-mind behind this revolutionary design studio, invites me to join her for a hot cup of green tea to discuss her design sensibilities, her plans for the studio and the present fashion scenario. While it was rather pleasant to sit with some of her family members, colleagues and friends on the chatai under a huge shady tree, what surprised me most was the sudden appearance of a peacock. Uma tells me that the gorgeous bird is part of the Upasana family and visits often to meet and greet and loves being fed some freshly baked auroville cookies.

While the distraction was rather fortunate, I focus back on our cheerful, determined lady in question and begin the rapid fire round of questions.

How would you define your personal style?

I think one thing that defines my style is my fascination with the color white. I can wear just about anything as long as its in white.

The pendant around my neck is the symbol of Auroville – the lotus flower motif. I always wear it.

How did Upasana happen?

I visited Auroville 14 years back for a short 2week exploration trip and ended up staying back with the inception of Upasana. Auroville is just the kind of place that encourages you to take up your passion and make a career out of it. One of our initial successes came in the form of Tsunamika (A waste-fabric doll named Tsunamika which was widely sold around the country to collect funds for Tsunami Relief) After that, there was no looking back.

Who are the people behind Upasana?

Its a huge team of young, inspired and creative people. Upasana has become a platform where students and volunteers from different parts of India and abroad come to learn and contribute to ongoing projects. They learn through real life engagements and creative exploration of Socially Responsible Design. At any point of time, we have a long list of young designers waiting to intern with Upasana. We really encourage this.

What is the work culture at Upasana?

Its very friendly but focussed. We are a family of like-minded, mixed-cultural people dedicated to Socially responsible design by intention. We give a very customised and unique design brief to every designer. It s based on their choice of field of work and their individual capabilities. There are no restrictions on creative thought in this studio.

What is Upasana’s USP?

In Upasana, the scope of design has been enlarged to be integral so that it touches all the facets of a product’s life-cycle - those who design and produce it, those who use it, the larger socio-cultural context and the environment.

What projects besides Tsunamika have you taken up?

We have successfully started 5 projects in 5 years. Tsunamika being our first project gave us the right launch, Another project we’ve been doing over last few years is with Benaras Weavers, An organic cotton project called ‘Kapas’, and the most recent being Small Steps. Small Steps is envisioned to be the full stop to plastic bags. We are making nearly 10 million fabric bags using waste fabric and employing village ladies. We also plenty of other

We don’t make a conscious effort to follow any trends but intuitively we do follow market trends. Between innovation and social responsibility, style just blossoms on its own at Upasana.

Bonjour Pondy!

The famous French colony of 18th century, Pondicherry’s charms are famous far and wide. The relaxed lifestyle, the French eateries and colonial architectural influence are some of the popular attractions. What I didn’t know was that Pondicherry is also becoming one of the fastest growing markets for eco-friendly and natural products. Blame it on its proximity to Auroville or the constant foreign tourist rush, the city’s shops are flooded with hand-made products.

Being hosted by my long time friend, Bidisha Samantray, I was bound to see the places that even lonely planet forgets to mention. So, reporting from a secluded beach in Auroville, I’m writing this post sitting outside my hut with only the sounds of a roaring ocean and some chirping of the birds.

My shopping excursion had to start with Living Art, the freshest store opened in the white town on the street Rue du Bazar Saint Laurant. Housing some of the most beautifully crafted products, providing employment to several villages across Orissa, Rajasthan and Gujarat, Bidisha’s store is full of charming little things from apparel to home furnishings to antiques and furniture. Best thing about this store is its selection of merchandise and its apt pricing. Its a must visit for its gorgeous appliqué bags, kaftan tops and innovative home furnishings.

The second Destination was Via Pondicherry, which was particularly nice for its selection of leather bags and accessories.

Next, Bidisha took me to the magical La Maison Rose, a colonial bunglow converted to a shopping place and restaurant.

This Bunglow houses three beautiful shops Oh la la!, Domus and Amethyst. I loved Oh La La! for its simplicity of design. The crinoline skirt with a wired hem is perfect a statement piece or a petticoat for gorgeous shaping.

Giving high street a break, Bidisha took me street shopping to her favourite roadside vendor, Opposite the Post Office, this is a treasure trove for all export brands that Indians are devoid of otherwise. You would be surprised to find some incredible chic pieces here!

My final stop, before leaving to Auroville was the fisherman market which is a great place for the plastic weave ‘lunch box’ bags and traditional imitation jewellery and other knick-knacks. Do not miss this market. Its a great place for photography too. (Though I forgot mine in all the excitement)

Also, when in Pondy do not miss having cocktails at the terrace top restaurant Qualithe, a rather shady place, popular hangout for the young tourists and savvy locals. Satsanga, a fine dining restaurant is another recommendation for brilliant French food.

While you’re walking down the promenade and past the beautiful Indo-French architectural wonders, you come to realise that this city is as charming as the decadent rosebud carefully nestled in middle of that old romantic novel. So totally classic and yet so endearing and special. A trip I’ll never forget.

Goa : Story of Sara

A New York Arts student comes down to India falls in love with the Indian arts and stays back for two months to come back to the place she calles her second home - Goa. This is the story of Sara Fisher. She came to Goa two years ago and fell in love with the rajasthani style of paintings.

Pukhraj ji, her guru and brother took her in as an intern and taught her his traditional painting style. She went to his small family village in Rajasthan and got acquainted with his family and village folks. She keeps visiting them from time to time and spends most of her days in goa in his art gallery on Baga Beach.

Pukhraj ji's younger brother calls her 'mausi'. She says that she hasn't formed a new family but found them again.

Sara believes that Pukhraj ji's one of the finest artist she's come across and deserves the status that most arstistes around the world have achieved.

I was bowled over by her simplcity and dedication to painting. The three days that I visited the gallery, I always found Sara immersed in her painting. She finds it very therapeutic and enoys the quiet and comforting company of Pukhraj ji.

The brass ring is the symbol of their relationship as siblings.

As I write this post, Sara must be in a small Rajasthani village baking chapatis on make-shift fire burners and spending her days dressing up as a rajasthani folk doll for everybody's amusement.

She's also coming up with a website for Ganesha Arts, Pukhraj Ji's art gallery and trying to put up an exhibition for him in New York.

The Orange Bicycle

Tucked away in one of Bangalore’s quiet residential area - Indiranagar, lies an absolutely delightful little store for all things fun and quirky. Started by 4 young girls as an endeavour to bring together innovative designs from all across India to the shoppers of Bangalore, The Orange Bicycle houses more than 80 designers’ products ranging from apparel to accessories to home decor. The store is sky rocketing on the Quirk quotient and a must visit if you’re in Bangalore.

This being my first visit to the garden city, I made it point to hangout with the happening Bangalore crowd. And who better to take shopping than the super awesome fashion bloggers – Ruhi Sheikh of Republic of Chic and Smrithi Rao of Vintage Obsessions. After a brief catching up and discussing the future of blogging and other random topics, we got down to what we do best – Shopping! Well, almost. So here is a selection of products we recommend from Orange Bicycle:

Smrithi fell in love with the patchwork ankle high thong shoes and purchased them in a heartbeat!

The orange Bicycle dress was the first thing that caught our eye. Simple, and so totally chic. Its a must, must must buy!

The ruffles on this top are so perfect for the resort wear mood that I’m in!

Al's Tattoo Parlour at Hill Road, Bandra

This is the second post on my long introduced segment : Style Quickie

The first post was about the incredibly spunky Sapna Bhavnani,

I'm so glad next person be featured here is Olly Alva, a tattoo artist based out of mumbai. He's part owner of the revolutionary Tattoo Parlour run by him and his brother on the Hill Road, Mumbai. Besides the unending list of celebrities who got inked here, most of Bandra's hipster crowd can be seen hanging out here catching up on coffee and contributing to creative thinking.

The tiny place that they run this parlour from is so psychedelic with hand-drawn graffiti and alien posters.

Here's a nugget of our 2 hour long conversation about random things that inspire us.

What is the most popular tattoo at your parlour?

Its the butterfly! Even though I'm bored-to-death making this one, I wouldn't stop... its big business!

Which one of your many tattoos do you like the most?

Its the one on my calf. Still Work in progress. Its inspired by William Blake's End of Days picture. I find this painting very interesting. I don't read too much into it. Tattoos represent a person's state of mind at that particular time only.

Do you help a person in deciding on a tattoo design?

Well if they seek my help, I do but I think its a very personal decision and I prefer if people draw their own tattoo. Nothing is more exciting than originality. Everybody is an artist. That's why I promote the Dada-ism movement. We need to stop treating art like some snob's private posession. Everybody has a right to creative expression and all of it is art.

Whats your favorite book?

I don't like reading too much. Though I do enjoy my friend Himanshu Shady's writings. Its a Dada form of written expression.

Pokhara Valley in Nepal

Your favourite travel destination?

Pokhra in Nepal is the most beautiful place I've visited. Its only in the mountains, away from the screechy city sounds and in the dark deep woods that I feel like I know myself. I've visited Pokhra plenty of times and don't think I'll ever get bored of this place. I think Alapuso in Kerela is also very captivating.

You'll laugh when I tell you this. I hate meaningful music. I like my music to mean nothing. My favourite sound track is from Ice Age2. I'm a nut is the best track ever! I enjoy meaningless, shitty music.

Good enough to cover yourself against the changing weather.

With jackets and trenches, padded shoulders and pointy lapels, velvets and suedes ... all in place to combat the chilly western winds; the eastern heart suffers the sudden withdrawal symptoms and languishes in the wait for the promised summers and blooming florals.

Seeing how ethnic embroideries and weaves are such a style statement, we tried to create a look that takes the edge off the structured winter wear.

Instead of pairing our perfectly tailored trenches with a rather over-worn pair of denims or trousers, we are pairing it with an outrageous skirt, a bright shawl and a colourful necklace. You must try wearing your Boyfriend jackets and trench coats with Shocking salwars, harem pants, embellished long skirts or even block print saris. Bring a rather desi twist to your winter wardrobe!

Stolen Sweaters!

Throughout my teens, I’ve borrowed a lot from my dad’s wardrobe. Especially in winters, Dad’s sweaters are always more comfy than your own. They’re big, droopy, warm and even make your hands disappear.... what’s not to love?

With Knitwear being a big trend and oversized jumpers selling all over the high street, it was time to revisit dad’s crazy 90’s sweater collection - with their argyle patterns and geometric gibberish.

My friend, Neetu Kasana, an upcoming model, shows you how to work this look without looking like a total slob!

Look 1 : With such a shapeless garment, its very important to keep the accessories strong so as to keep the look chic. The Betty Blue knee-high lace-up boots, River Island embellished leather bag and Kallol Datta scarf accomplish just that!

Look 2 : With the crazy colors of that Monte Carlo sweater, I tried to play on the tribal beat with an equally crafty cross body bag and a multi-color head band. To add shape, I cinched the waist with a tan belt. The gorgeous Miss Sixty Shoes provide the right amount of leg lengthening!

So won't you be Daddy's little girl all over again?

Appearance on the calendar has become a mark of distinction for models that are chosen, and over the years the supermodels and celebrities who have appeared have included Naomi Campbell, Gisele Budchen, kate Moss, Cindy Crawford, Sienna Miller, Penelope Cruz, Jennifer Lopez etc.

Its first time in 38 years that an Indian face (and body!) has appeared on the calendar... and who better than the gorgeous Laxmi Menon. Though the smouldering model has to share space with two other big shots, its definitely a good beginning!

The Italian tiremaker tapped famous fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld to create the 38th edition of its limited-edition calendar with Greek-themed "Mythology." 36 photos depicting Greek gods, heroes and myths are immaculately conceptualised by Lagerfeld. Appearing are an international group of models: 15 women, five men and Lagerfeld's friend and actress Julianne Moore as Hera, the wife of god of gods Zeus.

On the launch Karl Lagefeld was heard saying that he produced “the visual version of Homer. I did with my camera what he did with his pen, although we understand that he probably didn't use a pen.”

Its all about the uniform trend!
Okay, scratch that. Uniform trend is an oxymoron.
Fashion can't exist in the realms of uniform.. where's the fun?

When it came time for me to finally warm up to the utilitarian/combat trend.. I took out an old army inspired jacket and gave it a rather spardha twist. I might come across as a very 'colorful' person on this blog but ask my friends... I'm all about dull colors. But adding a pop of color in this rather grey delhi weather seems like just the right amount of sunshine to my day.

If that didn't make sense, don't bother.

These hotties were spotted at the Forever 21 store launch. I just couldn't help going clickety click.
I may have forgotten to ask most of the names here but well then again 'what's in a name, a rose shall smell just as sweet,' no?

This girl was bang-on trendy with the high waisted denims with exposed zipper, the lace blouse, satchel bag, super funky wedges. You should have seen the no. of bags she was carrying!! :)

These 4 ninth graders are perfect example of how fashion conscious young India is getting!

Loved their style - short, smart and comfortable!

She is a Photographer. The kaftan dress could look super overwhelming on anybody else but she's carries it of so effortlessly! Specially with those delish Zara TRF shoes, no?

And that neon nail paint is the perfect finishing touch.

Studs and florals - I always appreciate a cool mash up!

She must have spent an hour in the accessories section. It was fascinating to see somebody so engrossed with necklaces, hair bands... et al!

Victoria is a musician. She plays drums and is British. All her tats were done in Brighton, UK. She has been collaborating with Indian DJs throughout past year. Her fave tat is the one on her back - pair of wings!

She is a kindergarten teacher by the day and a Jazz dancer by the evening... how exciting!!

Aki Narula - I love the way he wears a kurta with a cotton blazer and super awesome scarf.

Totally makes it work. He told me the scarf was a street side pick... I love it!

It was so much fun meeting these people. I'm still a little shy at asking people if I could click them but Once I'm at it, the inhibitions quickly disappear.

Another brand has arrived in Delhi which is sure to give a major kick to all fashion addicts. With 3 huge malls right next to each other, Vasant Kunj has turned into a major style peddler. All the trendy hipsters with no intention of giving up on fashion anytime soon walk in with their credit cards ready to swipe faster than you blink. The heady rush is only bound to double up with the launch of Forever 21. Style and affordability rarely go together in the same sentence but Forever 21 walk the line quiet perfectly. Don't get me wrong, its not as cheap as its American counterpart but defnitely just as stylish. For those who haven't made it to store yet, here's a sneak peak.

The insane rush at the cash counter! God, I did not dare to shop! Sooon enough, soon enough .. ;)

Yes, they were serving water in case you were dying with all the shopping frenzy... smart people, eh?

I met a lot of very trendy shoppers and their general opinion was that the brand lives up to all the hype and expectations. the collection is very hip though the pricing is slightly disappointing. the stuff is especially going to be a hit with the younger crowd, i mean the teens and the collegiates!

I recently went for a Krishna Ballet performed at the Kamani Auditorium by one of India's best Dance/Drama troupes. I was absolutely spell bound by the sheer beauty and grandeur created on that stage. Music, lighting, scripting, performance.. everything was spectacular. But what caught my eye were the costumes.. they are so inspiring.. I can see them translated into a beautiful couture collections. And I'm not talking about embellishments here... the drapes, pleats of the skirted bottoms, the Shoulder/upper arm pads could be the next BIG thing. The sculpted shoulder armour is so unbelievably inspiring. Color combinations are unbelievable.

Even the make-up could work for a whacky Ramp look, no?

I hope somebody takes cues and gets cracking on their Indian Quotient!

Oh by the way, doesn't this remind u instantly of the Manish Arora hand Mudra collection??

Two waists - Never wear a belt at hip with a defined empire waist shirt/dress or the otherway round.

Travelling 2 hemispheres. It can't be winter on the top half and summer on the bottom!

T-shirts are not dresses. Even if you've got the legs.

Out of focus - Too manny attention grabbers end up creating a confused look. Be focussed!

Leggings are NOT pants. Hell no!

Low waist and skinnes = super bad combo on guys.

Denims so tight can damage your goods. Boys, please note.

Jersey Rompers are not in everybody's best interest.

In general, Ponchos are ugly and look ridiculous but I may change my mind.

Denims aren't quilts. Avoid the patchwork.

This is NOT how you do a Business-Casual. Stick to a dress code!

Fanny Packs are for tourists and the elderly. No exceptions

Clashing two strong prints is tricky. More often than not, it doesn't work. Keep atleast one of them subtle.

Dont Break your body into multiple parts. It only stumpifies you.

Like I said above.

Never Hide. Highlights your assets - small waist, Long neck, Shapely legs... whatever. Do NOT wear a tent.

Two anti-fits rarely work. Get your proportions right - Anti- fit on top, fitted on bottom and vice versa.

Down to the City Beautiful

So this weekend my family planned a sudden trip to Chandigarh to meet my cousins since rakshabandhan was around the corner. Chandigarh, often refered to as 'the city beautiful,' is only city in India that is a join capital of 2 states - Punjab and Haryana. The city designed by the french architect Le Corbousier is not only 2nd planned city of India(after new delhi) but also the cleanest city in India. This city is also my birthplace and holds a really special place in my heart. The wide tree lined roads, the distant view of hills at the horizon, the freshness of the air, warm people, beautifully planned houses, beautifully pruned round about circles... the city is truly as close as a city can get to Utopia!

The Pink City journal!

Jaipur or the pink city is the capital of Rajasthan or the land of royals!

The people are polite.. buildings are beautiful.. food is spicy and the crafts are insanely gorgeous.
I was in the city for 36 hrs and what fun it was. Work trip with most of the hours spent walking the aisles of FORHEX fair, a fair for furniture, handicrafts and gift items. The fair exhibitors included some of the leading Rajasthan based exporters who create the most exquisite of products only to exhibited in Europe and US.

Considering this was only the second edition of this fair and was open to general public at a reasonable entry fee... this exclusive fair was an eye opener for the Indian consumer. From traditional to Kitsch to modern minimalism.. the fair was amazing.

Also participating were some of the craft clusters of Rajasthan showcasing their traditional crafts intricately designed and reasonably priced. The merchandise on display would make you wanna throw every last piece of furniture in your house to replace it with these gorgeous things.

Enough said, here are some pics from the trip:

Rain followed me to the desert.. I mean from Bombay to Delhi to Jaipur and now back in Delhi... I've been living under the grey skies for past 2-3 months! I'm not complaining. Totally love this weather.

The Bar unit was made out of recycled wood. Making each piece unique and every product a boutique item. Cool concept of reusing wasted furniture pieces to assemble and finish.

Camel Leather is one the most used material for handicrafts from Rajasthan. The hand embroidery is painstakingly carried out on such a thick material making these products even more exquisite.

My favourite was the pop art inpired furniture... the mythological characters on the table actually pop up! perfect combination of mythology and contemporary styling with big ass dollop of funk! ;)

You must visit the next edition for some kickass deals and out of the ordinary furniture!

Must also visit the Amber fort's Son-et-Lumiere (Sound and Light) show. It was simply spell binding. Makes one so proud of such architectural gems and ones rich cultural heritage!

Men Are Back?

With second edition of Van Heusen India Mens Week around the corner, 27 - 29 August at The Grand Delhi, its that time of the year when Fashion's step sons take spotlight. Its quite a challenge to design menswear, the lines have to be perfect, the finishing immaculate and textures innovative. With Indian designers still hooked on turning Indian men into 'pretty boys,' we can only hope that this event will make them as competitive as their western counterparts.

While the drama on John Galliano's 2011 Spring runway would make Charlie Chaplin pop right out of his grave, its the insane detailing in the Lanvin collection that made me sit up and take notice of infinite menswear possibilities. The pointelle knit pants, the check trimmed jackets, the ridiculously sexy Biker Jacket variations, Denim Suits, Striped pants, Bomber Jackets... ahh the collection is to die for... or the reason to Live? You decide!

What is extraordinary though are the accessories - The modern strappy Floater slip-ons, The messenger bags and the KILLER jewelry. The designers Alber Elbaz and Lucas Ossendrijver, the geniuses behind this collection remark, "When women can wear pants, men can wear jewelry!" You Bet.

May the forces of madness and creativity forever rule design!!

Bombay by Night

How can you love bombay and not love the humid breezy bombay nights? Well, you can't! The only time when the streets aren't overloaded with cars and auto rikshaws. The only time when people aren't walking in herds trying to push each other over to get from one place to another in a hurry. Nights are the only time you get to admire the city lights that cast a little spell of sorts against the pitch dark sky. When little bicyle vendors are surrounded by Big cars trying to buy the last cigarette of the night or sipping a hot cup of coffee before passing out.

How can you miss all that?

My friends dragged me to a place called Kino 108, a quaint looking exterior for a buzzing lounge, tucked behind the crazy metro construction and between two very shamelessly unkempt buildings. The tiny elevator takes you to a really dark room bustling with some very trendy hipsters grooving to the blasting house music while sipping some seriously yummy cocktails. The night was perfect as was the idea of going back in an auto at 3am, wih rain gods showering us with their blessings(or wrath!)

A perfect night called for a perfect outfit... since, simplicity is NOT my middle name.. I ditched my boring denims and tees to slp into a newly found dress. When you pack light, you end up finding yourself without any accessories to match your outfit of choice. this is the exact situation where a lovely little magic trick comes to your rescue.

If you haven't figured out already ... I mean a red lipstick. If you've ever used one, you know the power it posesses.. it makes your skin look flushed, your eyes darker and your smile... well, only stunning! Okay, okay I'm sure you get the picture.

Dress - Dark Waters, Shoes - Bata, Hairband - Twisted, Lip Color - Nina Ricci

This was also the night I was supposed to catch up with two lovely blog buddies ;)

PS - I'm so thrilled that you guys liked the hair cut...!!! It was first time in a long time I decided to grow my hair only to get them brutallly cut (once again!). With the thickness of my hair, its very hard to even imagine the amount of shampoo, conditioner, leave in, serum expense it would require to maintain... and then the hours spent taming those tresses... ha, this haircut is totally wash and wear :D

Style Quickie - Sapna Bhavnani

So, this is a new segment I'm adding to my blog : Style Quickie

This segment will include people with inditiualistic style that I admire.

I'm so glad that the first person to be featured here is one of the most funnest, quirky and independent souls i know - Sapna Bhavnani, Hair stylista par excellence. Love her, hate her.. dude, you can't ignore her (Not that she cares for your approval :P) Her hair salon, very rightly named 'Mad O Wot' has become like a refuge for the crazy Stylish hipsters from across the city.

If you've been to this salon, you know how much creativity has been put into it. One look at Sapna, and you know the atmosphere resonates her inner exuberance and style. Bright, Young and Crazy - same words I'd choose to describe Sapna!

Anyway here's a quickie shared over a Ciggy:

1. Why Mad o Wot?

SB - When I started with my career, everywhere I worked I had to wear a uniform and cut hair with a mellow music playing in the background. I hate uniforms, I love hair so I started Mad o Wot. Its not a salon, its a home for everybody who enters. We listen to music, we bond, we share those few minutes being a part of each other's life.

2. You've just inaugurated your second salon? Whats in store.. any more franchisees?
SB - No WAY!! Its my second salon and I'm very conscious to make it just as quality strict yet relaxing and fun like the first establishment. I don't Intend to be the next Mc Donalds of Hair salons. I believe in quality and contentment. There's more to life than just making money.

3. Tattoos - Fashion or Art?
SB - Art, most definitely. It can't be fashion, tattoos aren't like a fad. They are not for everybody. They are not the new 'black'!

4.Best place for Tattoos?
SB - Getting inked is a very personal experience... comfort is of utmost importance. I don't get tattooed in bombay, I haven't come across any good tattoo artists here. My favourite experience would definitely be at the Koh Phi Phi islands in Thailand. Getting a tattoo made using bamboo sticks in the peace and quiet, next to the splashing sea waves was the most fulfilling experience for me. I hate the drilling sound of tattoo machine. Bamboo tattoos are so beautiful and real. Arunanchal pradesh is a great place for bamboo tattoos.

5. Your first tattoo?
SB - My back, Chicago, 1990, My boyfriend was a tattoo artist and I was his canvas. Its still a work in progress!

6. Your favourite Tattoo?
SB - The one on my upper arm - Daddy's little girl.. Its very special to me!

7. What is Style for you?
SB - In one word - Comfort!

Sapna lives everyday like it was a work of art. Even though I've never really got my hair cut from her personally (I'm forever broke and she is kinda expensive!) I always find my hair in the wacked-out shears of Sushil !!

Swapnil on the job!

He's adorable, totally in love with those scissors and the biggest Madonna fan ever. He could put Sue Sylvester to shame (ref - Glee for the uninitiated) You just have to feel the atmosphere at this place.. the vibe is so infectious and the haircuts are like botox... beautifying and age-defying(in my case ;))!!!

Oh, Oh, OH almost forgot.... Sapna is also a really awesome, new age social activist - her ways of making change are inspiring and interesting. You must be a part of this kickass new initiative she's introducing - Project Unite

The three words that could wreck anyone's day! hell, even their complete self confidence. I became a victim of this powerful weapon last evening when an anonymous person left a comment on my last post Turbanization. My immediate reaction was to delete it and down it with some rum and wake up next day with even more 'fat' to last me till the next attempt.

But I stayed mortified and actionless. I shut down the browser and looked in the mirror. Yes, I'm fat. Yes, I could lose 15 kgs and feel awesome. Yes, I could actually stick to my diet for once. Yes, I hate 'anonymous' and hate it even more that he's actually quite accurate in his description. But is that all that matters? Should I hide behind anonymity and run a treadmill till I'm perfect???

HELL NO, I'm not gonna stop loving fashion or dressing up or posting my pics just because One random prejudiced and myopic person thinks fashion's all about skinny girls. Its my blog, Its my space, Its my decision that matters. I'm me. I'm unique. I'm beautiful. I'm stylish. I'm unaffected.

and blog buddies.. don't let such assholes steal your sunshine either. I'm beautiful.. no matter what they say.. words can't bring me down!

Special days call for special efforts. Today I received an unsuspecting little parcel lying in my bedroom. Assuming its another official letter or something, I opened the envelope rather indifferently. Out came a teeny tiny net cloth tied into a bunch with pretty little red bow. Me being me, got super excited and ravaged through the packaging to reveal the mysterious item lying beneath. What was it?? hmm... well... ... okay can't create anymore suspense ..
It was a pretty little colorful ring!!! total oh my god moment... I'm being proposed to in the most unusual style!! (without a rock and candle light dinner and the kneeling and the wine... arrgghhh!!)

Well turning over the envelope, I read a familiar name scribbled - Koshy.

My answer is Yes, Yes, Yes!
So what if you're unemployed and younger and still a female? We can make it work, I promise

haha, okay jokes apart, it totally made my day receiving the precious little ring I won on her giveaway. Well, since Drama is my middle name henceforth. I used the ring in an absolutely unconventionally dramatically rad way (adjective overload!).

This post is also an ode to the lovely blogger sisters at Republic of Chic. I have tried turban before here, but this time with way more finesse thanks to their kickass tutorial!!

Is there ever such a thing as too much fashion? Can you ever be satisfied, much less be suffering with an overdose of fashion? As a self proclaimed insightful fashion writer, I have a theory to present : There's just so much fashion news and ideas bombarding through magazines, blogs, live fashion streams, youtube, even music videos, blah, blah, blah, its become essential to conform to the sartorial rules. In today's HT City, the so called fashion gurus were rating Indian Sports star's wives and GFs on their Glamour quotient. They were suggesting that Victoria Bekhams of the world are way ahead of the Indian Wives. What has world come to? Why is it not okay to be 'you'? Why do you have to be anorexic and Prada clothed to be fashionable?

In all this rat race to be the trendiest, we forget how much fun dressing up used to be. To have your own signature style. What's my style? I think about it really long and deep. I don't want to wear some wide leg pants just coz some fashionista says they're 'in' or blindly follow the flesh tone trend. I'm not a buffet person, I prefer À la carte! i wanna order what I like, exactly how I like it.

I want to grow up discovering style, like my mother, like all the other non-conformist divas out there. I love Fashion, but I hate feeling like I owe something to everyone watching :)

So, this blog is my quest to find 'me' through one thing that I enjoy the most - experimenting!

ha, so now that I have you all believe that I don't just want to wear all pretty clothes, click some funny pictures, waiting to receive some very sweet comments, I do it for greater good of mankind - to protest for Personal Style promotion... Who's joining me?

I've had this dress for a long time. Its a traditional tibetan dress I got custom stitched at a tiny boutique at Mcleod Ganj. the traditional seamstresses stiched this dress in a day and so perfect!

I had a morticia addams inspiration in mind when i wanted to style it... black nails, black lips... but somewhere along I found mom's gorgeous fish brooch. I really don't know if it looks more Retro Glam or Gothic Morticia. Either way I know this is what I'm wearing to a next evening out!

Or is it just Mournful chic (if that can even qualify as a term)?

I lost my grandmother - my beautiful nani on 17th June.
It hasn't been easy for my family past week. She was such an important part of our daily life. Everything in our house reminds us of her. Her memories are engraved in our hearts and its so difficult letting go.

She was kind, loving and dignified.. but most of all she was a real woman of substance.
She was widowed 10 years down her marriage and lost a young 16 year old son to cancer. She was a journalist at Tribune and has struggled throughout her life. But these last few years living with our family have been the sweetest years of her life. She used to dote on us kids and loved pampering us. She was so fit and optimistic... its mysterious how we lost her to a sudden heart attack.

Me and my family have mourned enough and are trying to smile every time we think of her. She was so witty too.

She was the first person to read my articles in magazine and enjoyed my blog. She was just so Cool!

I miss you Nani. I miss you very very much.

I will be back to blogging soon.

FIFA fever!

When fellow blogger, Scholars' life yesterday remarked, 'Costume party does sound good for the world cup occasion! football-themed?' I thought to myself... yeah right! but never to let go of an interesting challenge, I started thinking how could I pull off a football themed look and yet end up justifying the blog title... Turns out its not that difficult!

okay, so I'm not much of a soccer maniac except when the world cup craze starts building up... that too as an excuse to hang out with friends and guzzle some beer... and mostly every time I root for Brazil coz its got the Hotttest men... yes, I'm Lame, proudly so (have you seen Ronadinho?? yes I think he's hotter than Ronaldo.. so what if he's not even playing this year)!

I don't (obviously) own a single team jersey so I'm making do with my cousin's NBA TimberWolves jersey, which I believe somehow found a place in my wardrobe (le mystery!) And its GREEN so its close to Brazillian flag color!

I picked up SO many colorful laces an year back from Chandigarh and never used them... I'm glad atleast they found a way of making themselves useful! haha
